First Aid Training Package Review

The proposed updated Training Package replacements units for First Aid are now available for public comment and feedback

The main change regarding the Performance Criteria in delivering First Aid is Followed DRSABCD in line with ARC guidelines, including: 

- performed at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor
- performed at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles 
both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface
- managed the unconscious breathing casualty
 
The following are areas listed for inclusion and clarification
  • Secondary survey
  • Visual and verbal assessment of casualty (including information on a blood sweep) 
  • NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
  • Basic care of a wound
  • Following the prompt of an AED
  • What level of knowledge of physiology is required for “physiology relating to response/consciousness”?
  • Storage, cleaning and safe disposal of consumables 
  • Immobilisation principles (may include the use of resources such as stretchers, spine boards and collars)
  • Burns (refer to ARC guidelines) different types of burns
  • Bag-valve-Mask (BVM) does not include using oxygen in HLTAID006
  • Resources: Wound dressing (dry clean gauze or non-adherent pad to apply to a wound)
